Exploring how mythological creatures are depicted in video games and illustrated media

In deciding the title for the project, I decided solely to focus on mythological creatures. With this, I have shifted the focus of the project on investigating how creatures in mythology are represented in video games and other illustrated media.

Having looked at folklore, mainly concerning Japanese and Greek eras, the mythological creatures presented within said eras are the subject that I would like to investigate further, as many illustrations and graphical media have given their interpretation on illustrating the creatures in question. Delving into character design is one of my main interests, so looking into different routes to illustrate a mythical topic will be a likely subject to undertake because of the origin stories and the supposed nature they assume in myths. The research I undertake will not necessarily be limited to the aforementioned regions, as I am aiming to focus on human hybrid creatures within folklore and mythology.

Many game designers have taken several of these mythological creatures and given their own stylistic take. One example is the implementation of the Minotaur. While still recognisable as a fusion of bull and man, they often bear the fantasy influences of the fictional world that they occupy.

Some artists push the norms of the myth and apply their own artistic flair to the tale. Medusa was used in Assassin's Creed Odyssey, and was largely morphed by the artists at Ubisoft, forming their take on the mythological creature.

The general aesthetics of the mythical creatures are clearly still present within games and media, but NCSOFT and other companies tend to take the design to the next stage by adding aspects of fantasy to fit with their theme. Most of the interpretations of the myths tend to stay faithful to the original visuals of the creatures in question, though how each company or artist decides to illustrate the mythical creature can take radically large changes in design.
